Sieving is a cost effective method for particle size measurement. It is commonly used for Quality Control in almost all industries such as chemicals, mining and metallurgy, food, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and any laboratory involved in particle size analysis.

W.S. Tyler™ Test Sieves conform to the current ASTM E11-09, ISO 3310-1and ISO 565 standards.

Each sieve has a serial number and is supplied with a Certificate of Compliance.

Optional NIST traceable certifications are available, including statistics information on opening sizes and wire diameters.

A Sieve Shaker is usually required to provide a repeatable and uniform motion to ensure reproducible results. When fine mesh sieves are involved, hand sieving is not possible.

Sieve Analysis as a standard process in the analytical laboratory or in the food and environmental laboratory works perfectly only if the particles are removed from the sieve to the last grain. For efficient and safe cleaning of test sieves, the use of an ultrasonic cleaner is recommended.

A sieve analysis involves a column of stackable test sieves with wire mesh cloth (screen) placed in a mechanical Sieve Shaker (top sieve with the largest screen openings, each lower sieve in the column has smaller openings than the one above). A bottom pan is placed under the finest (bottom) sieve.

The sample is poured into the top sieve. The Sieve Shaker (see Ro-Tap®, Analysette 3 and other models) shakes the column for a fixed time. After this time, the fraction of the sample retained on each sieve and bottom pan are weighed. The weight of each fraction, divided by the total weight of the initial sample, gives the percentage of this fraction.
