HI 9146 is a water-resistant, microprocessor-based, Dissolved Oxygen meter with automatic calibration and temperature compensation (ATC).D.O. measurements in parts per million (ppm=mg/L) or in % of saturation. The temperature range is indicated in Celsius from 0 to 50°C with 0.1 resolution (also allows manual compensation of altitude and salinity). A polarographic probe is provided with a protective cover for the membrane. HOLD to freeze the reading on the LCD.

The HI 9146 DO Meter utilizes a polarographic sensor: the probe is composed of a platinum electrode and a silver electrode. A concentrated potassium chloride (KCl) solution is held in place over the surface of the electrodes by a PTFE membrane. An external voltage creates a difference in potential between the cathode and the anode (less than 0.5V).
The external voltage applied to the platinum electrode (cathode), silver electrode (anode), KCl solution and gas-permeable membrane material establishes a current that is proportional with the concentration of oxygen.
